Hanford, Benjamin

Born Cleveland Ohio, 1861; son of George Byington and Susan Elizabeth (Martin) H.; ed. under instruction of stepmother; married Alice M. Burnham. Learned printers' trade in office of Marshalltown (Iowa) Republican; removed to Chicago, 1879, and later to Philadelphia and New York; devoted 3 mos. each year for many yeras as public speaker on socialistic platform; three times nominated as Socialist candidate for governor of New York; candidate of Socialist party for mayor of New York, 1901, and for vice president of U. S., 1904 and 1908. Died 1910.
