A SoCal-Nev Section NExT session
part of the

Spring Southern California and Nevada MAA meeting

University of San Diego, CA

Abstract: The panelists will discussed various issues related to finding a topic and collaborators for proposals, preparing a proposal, submitting a proposal, as well as personal experiences. The types of grants that will be discussed are personal research, travel, and REUs. There will be time for Q&A as well. The goal is to help young researchers to better understand the grant application process, with emphasis on the writing and evaluation of a research proposal.

Panelists:

Prof. Fan Chung Graham, Dept. of Mathematics, University of California San Diego

Prof. Dan Rogalski, Dept. of Mathematics, University of California San Diego: Prof. Rogalski will address issues regarding the application for a grant:  exactly what work is involved in the application; how to think about "framing" your research; whether or not to consider joining in with other researchers or applying alone; and what criteria reviewers are likely to be using in evaluating your application.
