James N. Eagle is a Professor of Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1969, served on three nuclear attack submarines, qualifying in submarines and as Engineer. Under Navy scholarship, he attended Stanford University from 1971 to 1975, earning a master's degree in Operations Research and a Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems. His doctoral work was in decision theory and Markov decision processes. He left active duty in 1981 and worked under contract to the U.S. Navy to revise the Submarine Search Manual (NWP 73). He stayed active in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a captain in 1994. From October 2000 to December 2008, he was chairman of the Department of Operations Research at NPS. Professor Eagle's research interests include military applications of OR, especially in search theory and naval tactics development.
