Kip (Christian) Smith
Senior Lecturer of Operations Research

Kip Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Human Systems Integration. Teaching responsibilities include courses on Human Factors, Research Methods, Tradeoff Analysis and Team Performance. His research focuses on the impact of context, culture, and technology on command and control decision making by individuals and small teams. This research has been supported by ARO, TRAC Monterey, the FAA, the European Union Seventh Framework Program, the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, and the Swedish Rescue Services Agency. His consulting focuses on the design and analysis of field and laboratory studies of automatic active safety systems. He received his M.S. in geophysics from the University of New Mexico in 1977 and his Ph.D. in management from the University of Minnesota in 1996.

Teaching and research interests:

  • The impact of context and culture on the decision making of individuals and teams working in dynamic environments.
  • The interplay of anticipatory and compensatory control.
  • The propagation of constraints.
  • Thermal geohydrology.
