MV-3203 Graphical Simulation

Student Work from Spring 2011

Below you will find examples of student work from the second offering of MV3203 Graphical Simulation in Spring Quarter 2011. Note that students were required merely to show mastery of the various techniques covered in the course (e.g. smooth interpolation of orientation, positional audio, particle systems). All credit for working the techniques into a coherent application as far as this was accomplished goes entirely to the students! Note that the DivX codec (available free from divx.com) is needed to play many of the video clips.

First and third person shooter game. Utilize a submarine equipped with cruise missiles to take the time containing Usama Bin Laden. Check the scene from an aerial view to determine location then transition to the bridge of the sub to launch the missiles. Target can be in one of 7 tents or 1 tank, or somewhere else on the terrain (then untargetable). Can also steer to sub in the water to drive the sub to a location with a better line of sight.

Star Wars AT-ST running around a mountain terrain while the Imperial Star Destroyer orbits overhead. The AT-ST is controlled via the YGHJ keys (non-articulated). Rain and a fire on the AT-ST can both be triggered via R and L-Shift respectively. If he sees something he would like to shoot, the mouse controls the weapon.

You control a helo from either overhead, in-trail, or first person perspectives while navigating a circular canyon looking for the invading alien pods. Missiles can be aimed via the reticle. The alien pods explode into dice fragments designed earlier in the course. My favorite function allows a "ride along" with the missile to impact.

One Marine space ship with photon lasers, one advanced alien space ship with a force field. Explore the two universes that contain the plant Earth, Planet X and an Atomic Bomb. Explore the universe and make decisions on what to do to save planet Earth, but make sure you avoid the asteroids.

In my project I created a 3d visual simulation of a race car traveling around a race track in the countryside. User interface is limited to controlling the speed of the car through acceleration, braking, and turning on and off trailing blue flames. All functionality is accompanied by audio sampled from real formula-one cars.

Submarine Attack is a game where you get to sink enemy destroyers with torpedoes from a Virginia Class submarine. You only have twenty torpedoes in your arsenal so use them well. You will get points for sinking the enemy destroyers and you can dive the submarine at any time to avoid being rammed by the destroyer..

A simple game built to cause a volcano to erupt by dropping bombs (‘b’ key) into it from a helicopter that is flown using the arrow keys. The mouse can also be used to select the helicopter and its target. A smoke plume is used to determine how far off the user’s aim is. The helicopter can also bomb the barge and the Su-27 jet.
